February/March, 2011
Dear Parishioners,
If statistics are to be believed, 76% of Catholics believe they can be "a good
Catholic" without going to church every Sunday, and only 38% believe that private
confession to a priest is an "essential teaching" to their vision of what the Catholic
faith is about. (Source: American Catholics Today, copyright 2007, pp. 26-27).
We know that our faith teaches us that weekly Sunday (or Saturday night vigil)
Mass attendance is absolutely essential and that we are "strongly encouraged" to
receive the Holy Eucharist at least on Sundays and feast days. Moreover, the
reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation (at least once a year and/or when
conscious of serious sin) is also an integral part of the practice of our Catholic
Faith. (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, copyright 1992, #1389, 2181). As
we strive to promote excellence in every other aspect of our lives (personal and
professional), why is that being a "lukewarm" Catholic has become increasingly
acceptable in today's society? I think we can all agree that God's "best" for us also
includes a lively and passionate commitment in the way that we practice our faith.

We would like to take this opportunity to make you aware of the
LANDINGS program, beginning here at Immaculate Conception Church on
Tuesdays (starting on March 15) from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Youth Ministry room
of the JFK Middle School. LANDINGS is a ten week series, comprised of active
parishioners joined together to welcome returning or inactive Catholics through
prayer, faith sharing, and discussion of contemporary Catholic themes. No
pressure, no judgment, no interrogation - just an invitation to come "home" and
explore the possibility of a more active return to the faith. Perhaps you know
someone who has been away from the Church for a while, or maybe you are
looking to renew your commitment to becoming an active Catholic again. What
better time than now!

To
get started, please contact Bill Bryker at 724-222-6480 or email calledbyname@icwashpa.org.
Please spread the word and encourage someone to come "home" to the Catholic Church this spring!

Sincerely,
