The Newman Center at W&J

The Newman Center is the spiritual "home away from home" for Catholic students while on campus at W&J. There is a chapel where Mass is celebrated on Sundays and Holy Days and where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved for prayer. We also welcome students to spend time making use of our library and WiFi internet connection for a quiet place to study and to relax in our TV room or bring some friends to play at WII. Throughout the year, the Newman Center offers special home-cooked dinners, celebrations and many other activities.

The Newman Center is funded by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and is supported by staff and parishioners of Immaculate Conception Parish in Washington, PA.

Immaculate Conception ("IC") is a vibrant Roman Catholic Parish centered in the heart of Washington PA, just a few blocks from the W&J campus. The church offers further opportunities to attend Mass on weekdays and Sundays, times for Confession, and many opportunities to get involved in the life of the parish.
There are currently four priests and a religious sister who work together to serve the people of the parish and city in a variety of ways.

W&J students are always welcome at IC and the Newman Center.

How It Began...
The name "Newman" is used to honour John Henry Newman, a 19th century Englishman who was a professor and scholar, a convert to the Catholic faith and a priest, later created a Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. Cardinal Newman chose as his motto Cor and Cor Loquitur, that is, heart speaking to heart. It implies both a dialogue between God and the individual, and among individuals in His name, which is so important in the life and idea of the University.
